PITRU PAKSHA – REMEMBERING THE DEPARTED SOULS
Pitru Paksha is a span of time which is meant to honour, respect and admire the departed souls. It is observed, as per Hindu calendar, in the month of Bhadrapada. It is a 15 day period from Pratipada to Amavasya in The Krishna Paksha (waning moon). It is believed that the ancestors, who live in separate world known as Pitru-Loka, visit the Earth during this period of time. In this phase of time, people perform Shraddha or Pinda an offering made to the departed souls. The rituals of Shraddha does not relate to funeral rituals. However, it signifies a different form of worshiping the ancestors. It is performed mainly for following three generations which includes father, grandfather & great grandfather. To observe this, one has to remember the deceased ancestor’s time & date of death. As per that time and date, one has to find out tithi mentioned in The Panchanga. If an individual forgets tithi or does not know deceased person’s date & time of death, then he can perform Shraddh rituals on Amavasya i.e., Mahalaya. Mahalaya is the most significant day of Pitru Paksha. It is also known as Sarva pitri Amavasya.
These rituals hold great religious importance. As per astrological observations, it puts an end to many dosha created by the presence of malefic planet in an individual’s horoscope. The malefic position of Sun & Jupiter is one of the reasons to cause Pitru Dosha in horoscope. Besides, the presence of malefic planets in 9th house also forms this Dosha. The 9th house represents higher studies, prosperity, wealth, financial growth, reputation, fame, forefathers and fortune. That means both 9th house and its lord play important role in increasing a person’s fortune. The affliction means that if any negative / malefic planet is posited in 9th House or aspect it, the native suffers a lot in order to build fortunes in life.
Such Dosha slows down the wheel of fortune. This affliction is formed in a horoscope due to several reasons. One such reason is when a native disrespects, harms or ill treats elders. If the native and his / her family do not offer the departed souls Shraddh in tithi day or Pitra Paksha, the 9th house gets severely afflicted or Pitra dosha is formed. Performing such rituals is not superstitious but an act of honour towards our ancestor. If such rituals are not followed, the native suffers from Pitra dosha or the 9th house of the horoscope gets severely affected by malefic planets. Good deeds and donation of food is also regarded as a remedy to reduce the negativity of Malefic Planets. It also brings peace to the souls of ancestor.
