Pitru Paksha is a span of time which is meant to honour, respect and admire the departed souls. It is observed, as per Hindu calendar, in the month of Bhadrapada. It is a 15 day period from Pratipada to Amavasya in The Krishna Paksha (waning moon). It is believed that the ancestors, who live in separate world known as Pitru-Loka, visit the Earth during this period of time. In this phase of time, people perform Shraddha or Pinda an offering made to the departed souls. The rituals of Shraddha does not relate to funeral rituals. However, it signifies a different form of worshiping the ancestors. It is performed mainly for following three generations which includes father, grandfather & great grandfather. To observe this, one has to remember the deceased ancestor’s time & date of death. As per that time and date, one has to find out tithi mentioned in The Panchanga. If an individual forgets tithi or does not know deceased person’s date & time of death, then he can perform Shraddh rituals on Amavasya i.e., Mahalaya. Mahalaya is the most significant day of Pitru Paksha. It is also known as Sarva pitri Amavasya.
